Molecular biologist for microbiome analyses in CRC

The Institute

The Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) is an international biomedical research institute of excellence, based in Barcelona, Spain, with more than 400 scientists from 44 countries. The CRG shares principles of an interdisciplinary, motivated and creative scientific team that is supported by high-end and innovative technologies and a flexible and efficient administration.

CRG has been conferred with a badge of ‘HR Excellence in Research’ by the European Commission, in recognition to its progress in implementing the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for Recruitment of Researchers, that among others consists of transparent, merit-based recruitment procedures and attractive work-life balance working conditions.

The role

We are looking for a highly motivated experimental scientist to work in our lab of Comparative Genomics leaded by Dr. Toni Gabaldón, at the Bioinformatics and Genomics Department, at the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG).

The main goal of project the candidate will be principally involved in is to study the microbiome and mycobiome in FIT (Fecal Immunochemical Test) samples collected from general population. This data will be analysed and incorporated in a risk model along with other genetic and environmental data to better predict CRC in combination with the current screening programs. This is a translational project which will be done in tight collaboration with different clinical and research groups with the final aim of optimizing CRC prevention in the general population. The selected candidate will be in charge of implementing and performing metagenomic DNA extraction methodologies of these type of samples to subsequently perform library preparation and sequencing of them. He/she will also work developing methodologies to target the fungal component of the microbiome in these type of samples.

The applicant is expected to have strong experience on basic molecular techniques and he/she should have enthusiasm and motivation to work rigorously in a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary team. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to work in an international research lab with state-of-the-art technologies and in tight contact with researcher form different backgrounds (computational, experimental and clinicians).

About the team/ lab/ department

The Comparative Genomics group is led by Dr. Toni Gabaldón at the Bioinformatics and Genomics Department of the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG, http://www.crg.eu/en/toni_gabaldon ) in Barcelona, Spain. The major focus of the research in the group is the analysis of the evolution of protein-coding and non-coding genes at genome-wide scales. For this we combine state-of the art computational and experimental techniques. The group is involved in several large-scale genomics studies including whole genome sequencing, transcriptomics and metagenomics.
