The role

We are seeking an experienced Lab Technician to join the Epitranscriptomics and RNA Dynamics group, to provide support in wet lab experiments related to the study of the role of RNA modifications (the “epitranscriptome”) in sperm RNAs. Specifically, we will study how different dietary intakes (e.g. high fat diet) affect the sperm RNA populations and their RNA modifications, and how these changes in sperm RNA can lead to altered metabolic profiles (e.g. altered glucose tolerance tests and insulin tolerance tests) in the next generations.

The lab technician will be responsible for handling the mice colonies (breeding, setting up diets), collecting mice tissue samples (mainly testis and epididymis), extraction of sperm cells from epididymis (swim-up techniques, FACS), extraction of sperm RNA populations, and analysis of the RNA samples using diverse molecular biology techniques, including next- and third-generation sequencing technologies (library preparation, Oxford Nanopore sequencing, Illumina small RNA sequencing) as well as molecular biology techniques (western blot, qPCR). In addition, dysregulated RNA candidates will be microinjected to zygotes, in collaboration with the Tissue Engineering Facility at CRG.

The candidate will also contribute to the general organization and maintenance of the lab supplies, coordination of laboratory safety and inventory.

The candidate will provide support to current ongoing research projects in the lab, as well be involved in the development of novel techniques in close collaboration with other lab members.

The candidate may also have a smaller project of their own to be discussed with the PI related to the research lines of the lab, if this is of interest to the candidate.  

About the lab

Our lab is focused on deciphering the role that RNA modifications play in a large variety of cellular contexts, including the development of novel technologies to map RNA modifications. In our lab, we are employing a combination of experimental (RNASeq, RIP-Seq polysome profiling, mouse/cell knockouts, Oxford Nanopore direct RNA sequencing) and computational techniques (NGS data analysis, algorithm development, machine learning), to unveil the secrets of three post-transcriptional regulatory layers: the epitranscriptome, RNA structure and ribosome specialization.

Whom would we like to hire?

Professional experience

To be successful in this application, you will be an analytical thinker with a strong background Molecular Biology (preferably related to RNA biology) and proven experience in in Mice Colony management and Animal Manipulation.

You will also possess the following key skills and attributes:

Must Have

• You have minimum of 5 years of experience in a laboratory performing Molecular Biology experiments (western blot, qPCR, RNA extraction, library preparation), preferably in RNA biology
• You have at least of 3 years in mice colony management and/or mice manipulation (tissue collection, anesthesia, mice breeding)

Desirable but not required/ Nice to have

• You have experience with Glucose Tolerance Tests (GTT) and/or Insulin Tolerance Tests (ITT) in mice
• You have experience in sperm RNA extraction techniques and/or sperm manipulation
• You have experience with zebrafish management, breeding and collection of embryos
• You have experience with Oxford Nanopore sequencing
• You have a background in RNA biology and/or manipulation of RNA samples
• You have experience in microinjections in zygotes

Education and training

• You hold a BSc, MSc and/or PhD degree in Molecular Biology, Biology, Biochemistry or similar field.
• You hold a title for Animal Experimentation that is recognized by the Catalan Government


• You must be fluent in oral and written English
• You must be fluent in oral and written Spanish or Catalan


• You have excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
• You have the capacity for carrying out duties under minimal supervision
• You have the drive and commitment to produce high quality experimental outcomes
• You have highly developed organization skills

The Offer – Working Conditions

• Contract duration: 2 years (renewable up to 7 years)
• Estimated annual gross salary: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and consistent with our pay scales
• Target start date:  March 2022
