Junior Bioinformatician – Computational Protein Design and Software Infrastructure

The Institute

The Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) is an international biomedical research institute of excellence, based in Barcelona, Spain, with more than 400 scientists from 44 countries. The CRG is composed by an interdisciplinary, motivated and creative scientific team which is supported both by a flexible and efficient administration and by high-end and innovative technologies.

In September 2026, the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) has received the renewal of the 'HR Excellence in Research' Award from the European Commission. This is a recognition of the Institute's commitment to developing an HR Strategy for Researchers, designed to bring the practices and procedures in line with the principles of the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers (Charter and Code).

The role

We are looking for a highly motivated junior bioinformatician to support the computational protein design work of the Design of Biological Systems group (Dr. Luis Serrano) and its software infrastructure. This is a technical support role rather than a research training position: the bioinformatician will work on concrete group needs, in close collaboration with researchers, PhD students and experimental collaborators.

Main responsibilities:

  • Validation of a diffusion model for peptide generation: run benchmarks, compare generated peptides using structural and energetic criteria (FoldX, AlphaFold3, Boltz) and report results to the team.
  • Automation of molecule parameterisation in FoldX: develop and maintain scripts and pipelines that generate FoldX parameters for new small molecules and non-standard residues.
  • Software maintenance and distribution: take charge of compiling, maintaining and version-controlling the group's development and distribution infrastructure, including FoldX (multiplatform builds, dependency updates, portable binaries and release support).

About the team

Our group aims to quantitatively understand biological systems and to rationally design and modify their behaviour. We develop software that spans biological databases to structural modelling at the atomic level, including the FoldX suite (foldxsuite.crg.es) and ModelX (modelx.crg.es). We combine these computational tools with experiments to validate our predictions.
