Bioinformatician in Environmental Metagenomics

The Institute

The Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) is an international biomedical research institute of excellence, based in Barcelona, Spain, with more than 400 scientists from 44 countries. The CRG is composed by an interdisciplinary, motivated and creative scientific team which is supported both by a flexible and efficient administration and by high-end and innovative technologies.

In April 2021, the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) received the renewal of the 'HR Excellence in Research' Award from the European Commission. This is a recognition of the Institute's commitment to developing an HR Strategy for Researchers, designed to bring the practices and procedures in line with the principles of the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers (Charter and Code).

The role

We are looking for a Bioinformatician in metagenomics to join our team in the PyriSentinel project (pyrisentinel.eu), a European-funded initiative dedicated to investigating the microorganism diversity of high mountain lakes in the Pyrenees using advanced long-read sequencing techniques. This region, experiencing a warming rate higher than the global average, is a vital observatory for studying the impacts of global climate change. The project examines approximately 300 lakes, which, due to their extreme conditions and climatic variations, harbor a significant diversity of microorganisms. Characterizing these planktonic communities will help assess the health status of these ecosystems, preserve their genetic heritage, and study the possible consequences of environmental changes in these sentinel lakes. PyriSentinel aims to provide a detailed insight into the genetic diversity of aquatic microorganisms in the Pyrenees, promoting advanced techniques and establishing a benchmark in genomics-based biomonitoring, thus contributing to the international effort to characterize the global microbiome.
As part of our team, the selected candidate will be primarily responsible for the analysis and interpretation of metagenomic data generated within the project. The position also involves contributing to integrating genomic and environmental datasets, supporting project scientific outputs, and actively participating in consortium meetings and collaborative exchanges with project partners.

About the team

The overarching theme of the research in our lab is the understanding of the information encoded in genomic sequences, and how this information is processed in the pathway leading from DNA to protein sequences. Our group is mostly computational, and we do both large-scale data analysis and development of methods, but it has also an important experimental component. We participate in many large scale international functional genomics projects, such as ENCODE, GTEx, and others. For more information: https://genome.crg.es/.
